This week, we decided to focus again on the holiday of Purim. Our theme was on giving and receiving and we fulfilled the one of the mitzvahs (commandments)of Purim of giving an edible gift (Mishloach Manot) to a friend. Each participant was given a colored paper bag and a variety of cutouts of images including: airplanes, buttons, star of Davids, houses, animals, hearts cucpakes etc.
Before they began decorating their bag, they were asked to think of whom they would give this gift bag to, and think of them as they designed it. They were also given a blank card to decorate and fill out. Although this project seemed simple, the act of choosing images, gluing them down and giving a gift to another person were all positive and stimulating elements of this project. Participants were highly engaged in the art making and had very specific people in mind for recipients. Each participant was given: a pack of raisins, crackers, and hard candies to put inside of their bag.
It is possible to do great art projects on a shoestring budget. This project totaled about sixty cents per participant. Searching craft stores for sales and looking in unsuspecting places for art materials is a great way to keep groups intersting. The elderly population tends to like to take home nice looking finished projects, so for this particular group, prep work is essential.
We concluded our session discussing the feelings connected to giving and receiving.
